Ram's Horn Fossil / Mineral Physical Properties
Fossils are the preserved remains of once-living creatures. These Ram's Horn fossils were suddenly buried in volcanic ash sediments and/or gravelly mudslides over 100 million years ago. That is why they are so well preserved.
They are composed primarily of Calcium Carbonate, (Calcite), and many have absorbed minor minerals such as Iron-Sulfide, Iron-Oxide, or Magnesium-Oxide. They vary in color from pearly-white to dark steely-gray with some having shades of orange-red, brown, tan, and purple hues. Sparkly Marcasite crystals can be found on some of the specimen. Marcasite is a different crystal form of Pyrite which is also known as fool's gold.
Some specimen show tiny pin-hole worm burrows caused by prehistoric boring worms which fed on the succulent oyster inside. Also a good number of fossils found are still attached to other specimen and sometimes smaller Ram's Horns oysters can be found lodged inside larger ones. Every Ram's Horn fossil is uniquely different.
Fossil / Mineral Metaphysics
Many of their known physical properties can be scientifically proven. The metaphysical realm of minerals and fossils, and their unseen properties, however, is difficult to comprehend or consistently prove. Mineral metaphysics ties the physical properties of minerals to their spiritual properties as they correlate. A good example is Calcite, which is composed of Calcium Carbonate. Physically Calcium is well known to be a major component of our skeletal structure and is very important for our bodily function. So, it stands to reason that spiritually, it would be conducive to spiritual stability, etc.. Thousands of people believe and attest to having had their own enlightening or healing experiences with minerals or fossils. You might say that their belief was the deciding factor that drew their experience. This is true, but most were unbelieving before such an encounter. But there is more....
Calcite / Ram's Horn's Signify Strength
Our Fossils are primarily Calcite, (calcium carbonate). The calcium from Calcite we know is good for the teeth and bones. Many building stones such as marble and limestone are mainly composed of calcium carbonate but are just different forms. So, its very nature would signify strength and support. The familiar shape of the Ram's Horn also represents strength, and also is a symbol of abundance known as the Horn of Plenty.
Volumes of books have been written about the physical or metaphysical properties of minerals and fossils relating to humankind. In one book called Crystal Power, Crystal Healing, by Michael Gienger, he states: "Calcite has been used for thousands of years as lime in folk medicine. It was used as a poultice mainly for skin diseases, ulcers, warts, and suppurating wounds.", "Calcite is known to help bestow stability, trust in ourselves and constancy. It is effective against laziness and fortifies the ability to overcome difficulties. It also encourages the ability to transform ideas into actions, improving the ability to discriminate and differentiate. It enhances memory and can help us to be more energetic, industrious and successful!!!! Physically, Calcite stimulates metabolism, fortifies the immune system, alleviates skin and intestinal complaints, and encourages healing of tissue and bone. It is a normalizer and strengthener of the rhythm and function of the heart." Other books written referring to Calcite's properties describe it in very similar fashion.
Biblical Reference to the Ram's Horn
Biblically, The Ram's Horn symbolizes strength, authority, and sacrifice. In Genesis we find that the Ram's Horns, (strength), that were caught in the thicket, symbolized authority as Christ the sacrificial lamb.
The sounding of the Ram's Horn trumpet called the shofar in Hebrew culture announced the coming of the king, a call to assembly, or a call for repentance. The shofar also sounded preceding battle and after a victory! The walls of Jericho came down after the Ram's Horn trumpet blast, and in the Dead Sea scrolls we read that during battles, shofar blowers sounded a powerful war cry to instill fear into the hearts of the enemy. Historically the shofar has also served in a number of popular usages: it was sounded during rites to bring rain, in the event of local disasters, and so on.
